How Does This Test Work?
It's actually quite easy! To check your connection speed, we embedded a large
data file into this page and measured how long it took for your computer to load
it. The times just before the data loads and just after it finishes are noted.
These numbers are then calculated to determine your connection speed.
Why the Variances in Speed?
Like the freeway at quitting time, the Internet can easily get bogged down with
connected users trying to get where they want to go. Peak surfing times
(typically between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.) can significantly affect speed. Plus, no
connection device, whether it be the latest 56K dial-up modem or an even faster
cable modem, performs at 100%. Why? Take 56K modem for example. They require a
clean, straight-through telephone connection to the telephone company's central
office switching center. This rarely happens. Phone signals often encounter
interference and the result is that your 56K modem is forced to fall back to
speeds of 33.6Kbps and lower. FCC regulations must also be considered. They
prohibit against 56K modems using their full speed for fear that they may
interrupt ordinary phone line operation.
As you can see, outside influences, such as static electricity, phone line
performance, governmental regulations, can cause you to experience varying
speeds at varying times, so be sure to check back with us often to test your
connection speed!
Disclaimer:
The calculations present here, assume a "perfect" connection,
at the mentioned speed. Actual performance may vary, depending on latency,
retry's and extra-traffic. ComSouth has no control over any traffic above the
connection here.
